Some new picks for summer reading
Jacqueline Woodson, one of my favorite authors, who wrote
has a new book out "Another Brooklyn".

Jacqueline Woodson's "Another Brooklyn" is a compelling coming-of-age story (adult novel) about August and her girlfriends, Sylvia, Angela, and Gigi set in 1970s Brooklyn. As a woman August returns home and has a chance encounter on the subway with her childhood friend. This encounter sets in motion a series of memories that tell their story of friendship, adolescence, race, and culture. Beautifully written and every bit as poetic as you'd expect from her but a bit edgier. One reviewer captured the essence of the book in two sentences ... This gorgeous novel is a poem. It is a love letter to black girlhood.
The book would make a great selection for a book club as well as "Song Poet".
From the author of "The Latehomecomer", a powerful memoir of her father, a Hmong song poet who sacrificed his gift for his children's future in America. Following her award-winning book "The Latehomecomer", Kao Kalia Yang now retells the life of her father Bee Yang, the song poet, a Hmong refugee in Minnesota, driven from the mountains of Laos by American's Secret War.

In the Hmong tradition, the song poet recounts the story of his people, their history and tragedies, joys and losses; extemporizing or drawing on folk tales, he keeps the past alive, invokes the spirits and the homeland, and records courtships, births, weddings, and wishes.

Follow this link for a book review  of "The Latehomecomer" previously published on Ever Ready. It was truly a compelling story.

  1. You gave me an idea for Saturday brunch with my daughter and husband on Saturday. A smoothie. Now I need an egg bake, which I bet you have on your site. And then maybe muffins. Perfect. Thank you.
