National S'mores Day

Rejoice! Today is National S’mores Day which recognizes the most popular campfire treat! People of all ages love this gooey, toasted treat.

The origin of this tasty snack is credited to the entrepreneur Alec Barnum. However, the first recorded version of the recipe can be found in the 1927 publication of Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts. Even though the Girl Scouts were not the first ones to make S’mores, Girl Scout groups describe them in their reports as early as 1925. Earlier recipes used the name “Some Mores.” It is unclear when the word “S’mores” became the more common name.

Today, many variations on the original S’mores find their way around a campfire.
CAMPFIRE CONES
Everyone loves S’mores as a classic campfire treat. They are a gooey sticky mess and I love them. But these Campfire Cones are a fun twist on S’mores.
The recipe idea is from thegirlwhoateeverything
Maybe you don’t have roasting sticks? Maybe you’re camping in your backyard and don’t have a fire pit? Feeding a crowd and don’t want to have 100 hot wires flying around a fire? These Campfire Cones can be wrapped in foil and thrown in the coals of a fire or baked in your oven.

Either way, they’re delicious. You can assemble them ahead of time or have everyone create their own. We are using waffle cones as our portable S’mores container.
Ingredients:

  • waffle cones
  • mini marshmallows
  • chocolate chips
  • graham cracker pieces
  • Optional toppings: M&Ms, Rolos, peanut butter cups, bananas, strawberries, coconut, brown sugar, butterscotch chips, nuts, anything your imagination can come up with foil
Directions:
Layer desired waffle cones with toppings and wrap in foil. Toss in the campfire coals for 5-7 minutes or until everything is nice and melted. They can also be baked in the oven at 400 degrees for 5-7 minutes. Can be assembled ahead of time for a fun treat.
