A Summertime Smoothie

Chia seeds are members of the mint family. Ancient seeds once cultivated by the Aztecs, they grow most readily in Mexico and the U.S. Southwest. Chia seeds have exploded in popularity in recent years. Food companies are adding seeds to cereals, breads, drinks, puddings, bars, and many other foods you throw into your shopping cart. Maybe you've even hopped on board the chia bus by putting ‘em in your smoothies. Chia seeds contain large amounts of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, plenty of high-quality protein, and several essential minerals and antioxidants.

They may improve digestive health, blood levels of heart-healthy omega-3s, and risk factors for heart disease and diabetes. An ounce of chia seeds (about 2 tablespoons) contains 138 calories
A common dosage recommendation is 20 grams (about 1.5 tablespoons) of chia seeds, twice per day.
Almond Breeze Milk is made by blending almonds with water and then straining the mixture to remove the solids. You can also make it by adding water to almond butter.
It has a pleasant, nutty flavor and a creamy texture similar to that of regular milk. For this reason, it is a popular choice for people following a vegan diet and those who are allergic or intolerant to dairy.
You can find almond milk in most supermarkets, usually in the health food section. It is also very easy to make at home.
Commercial almond milk comes in a variety of brands and flavors. For health reasons, it is best to choose almond milk that does not contain added sugar.
Some health benefits include: does not raise blood sugar levels. it's dairy-free, low in calories, it's high in vitamin D, enriched with calcium, and it may strengthen your bones and reduce the risk of heart disease.
In a hurry for your smoothie? There are lots of choices buying a premade smoothie packet. This one came from Whole Foods.
Summer in a Cup
Cook's Notes: If you like berries, citrus, and sweet-creamy smoothies, this is the recipe for you. It starts with a frozen banana, then loads of frozen raspberries and strawberries. This provides a cold, creamy-thick base, as well as a sweet-tart flavor contrast. Next comes unsweetened Almond Breeze almond milk, orange juice, and pomegranate juice for the perfect mix of creamy, sweet, and tart.
Silken tofu can be added in for a protein boost. I added in 1 teaspoon of chia seeds.
Recipe adapted from https://minimalistbaker.com and makes 2 drinks.
Ingredients:
  • 1- 1/4 cups frozen raspberries
  • 1 large ripe, sliced and frozen banana (1 banana yields ~1 cup)
  • 1 cup frozen diced strawberries
  • 3/4 cup each pomegranate juice, orange juice, and plain unsweetened Almond Breeze Almond Milk
Directions:
  • Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until creamy and smooth, scraping down sides as needed.
  • Taste and adjust flavor as needed. Add more milk or fruit juice if too thick. Add more frozen banana if not sweet enough. Serve immediately. Freezes well (or make smoothie into popsicles).
