Southernism (noun)

1. a locution or pronunciation peculiar to the southern part of the United States
2. an attitude characteristic of Southerners (especially in the US)

You might not realize but there are a lot of southernisims (sayings) you are already familiar with such as

Southerners  have a lot of sayings or funny expressions that have came from their Daddy or Mama, Grandma or Aunt Sadie and were carried on in family traditions spreading across the country and even up into Yankee country.
  • A crowded room is "working alive".
  • A freezing morning is "cold as a wedge."
  • A man and women who are having an argument can be said to have "fit."
  • If they "foughten," it means they were throwing chairs.
  • Knee babies are toddlers.
  • And “tea” can only mean Southern style sweet tea!
  • We done plowed this furrow clean down to the bedrock! Time to rest the mule, Ma's translation: We've already discussed this - let's move on
  • Lost as last year's Easter egg, meaning confused.
  • The light's on but nobody's home or the elevator don't quite reach the top, meaning not smart.

Perhaps in your family you also have some funny sayings that have been passed down .
