Ken Burns and Blog Roll

Perhaps its the teacher in me that was drawn to the intriguing article ( Striving to Learn Political Poetry in The Times Union newspaper April 13, 2014) on Ken Burn's upcoming PBS special called "The Address". The documentary will be broadcast Tuesday April 15th and is a departure from his other films. It is a contemporary film that was inspired by Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
Burns uses a contemporary setting to present a modern twist on the speech Lincoln gave more than 150 years ago. "The Address" takes place at the Greenwood School, a small school in Vermont for boys with a range of complex learning disabilities. Each year, the students are encouraged to memorize and recite the Gettysburg Address, a tradition at the school for some 35 years. For the students it presents significant personal and academic challenges. The film show how they are motivated and engaged by the words in the 10 sentence speech.
Of course reading this motivated me to find the full text and count if the speech was really 10 sentences and 2 minutes long. I had thought it was longer speech than that.

At the dedication of the National Cemetery in Gettysburg President Lincoln delivers a two-minute speech. Immediately following the speech he calls it a "flat failure." The speech is known today as the Gettysburg Address.
