Weekend Round-Up

With a stack like this my reading list will no doubt take me into 2019. Here are my Top Ten Titles. Each book in the next few months will be reviewed on sockfairies.
Love and Other Consolation Prizes
From the bestselling author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet comes a powerful novel, inspired by a true story, about a boy whose life is transformed at Seattle's epic 1909 World's Fair. Against a rich backdrop of post-Victorian vice, suffrage, and celebration, Love and Other Consolations is an enchanting tale about innocence and devotion--in a world where everything, and everyone, is for sale.
Educated
An unforgettable memoir in the tradition of The Glass Castle about a young girl who, kept out of school, leaves her survivalist family and goes on to earn a PhD from Cambridge University.
The Lost Letter

A historical novel of love and survival inspired by resistance workers during World War II in Austria, and the mysterious love letter that connects generations of Jewish families. A heart-breaking, heart-warming read for fans of The Women in the Castle, Lilac Girls, and Sarah's Key.

Killers of the Flower Moon
Killers of the Flower Moon was one of its top ten non-fiction books of 2017. In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Indian Nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, they began to be killed off under mysterious circumstances and anyone who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered. As the death toll surpassed more than twenty-four Osage, the newly created F.B.I. took up the case.
A Fall of the Marigolds
A beautiful scarf connects two women touched by tragedy in this compelling, emotional novel from the author of A Bridge Across the Ocean and The Last Year of the War.

September 1911. On Ellis Island in New York Harbor, nurse Clara Wood cannot face returning to Manhattan, where the man she loved fell to his death in the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. Then, while caring for a fevered immigrant whose own loss mirrors hers, she becomes intrigued by a name embroidered onto the scarf he carries.

The Library Book
A dazzling love letter to a beloved institution—and an investigation into one of its greatest mysteries—from the bestselling author hailed as a “national treasure” by The Washington Post.
Weaving her lifelong love of books and reading into an investigation of the fire, award-winning New Yorker reporter and New York Times bestselling author Susan Orlean delivers a mesmerizing and uniquely compelling book that manages to tell the broader story of libraries and librarians in a way that has never been done before. The centerpiece of Orlean's narrative is the catastrophic 1986 fire that turned Los Angeles' main library into a smoldering ruin. Arson was suspected and a wannabe actor by the name of Harry Peaks, the suspect.
Last Runaway
New York Times bestselling author of Girl With a Pearl Earring and At the Edge of the Orchard Tracy Chevalier makes her first fictional foray into the American past in The Last Runaway.  It brings to life the Underground Railroad with its illuminating principles, passions and realities that fueled an extraordinary freedom movement.

Louisiana's Way Home (YA novel)
From two-time Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo comes a story of discovering who you are — and deciding who you want to be.
When Louisiana Elefante’s granny wakes her up in the middle of the night to tell her that the day of reckoning has arrived and they have to leave home immediately, Louisiana isn’t overly worried. Bridge of Clay

An unforgettable and sweeping family saga from Markus Zusak, the storyteller who gave us the extraordinary bestseller The Book Thief  lauded by the New York Times as "the kind of book that can be life changing." This a breathtaking story of five brothers who bring each other up in a world run by their own rules.
A Suitcase of Seaweed
A Suitcase of Seaweed is a collection of poems for teens. Poet Janet Wong was inspired by her Chinese and Korean heritage and her American childhood in writing these poems about race, identity, and the wide variety of emotions that a young adult feels.
